Chapter Fifteen

Interviews & Altercations

The next morning, without consulting her husband or sister, Jane composed a letter to her father. She had not intended to do so when she retired the night before, nor had the urge struck her immediately upon waking. Not until she faced a sullen, headache-afflicted Lydia across the breakfast table, still defiant and certain that all her family wished her ill, did she decide that the situation could not continue.

Settling at the little writing table in her private parlour, she dipped her pen, allowing a few drops of ink to spill back into the well as she deliberated over her words.

My dear papa, she wrote at last. Though I recall and understand your prior resolution regarding Lydia’s visit to town, circumstances have unfolded since our arrival which make evident the imprudence—nay, the impossibility—of her continued residence here. I fear I must implore you to call her home…

Jane still felt all the force of her protestations the night before. They could not send Lydia home without provoking a scene both distasteful and disreputable. She had not suggested then that they write to Papa because she knew Elizabeth would dismiss the possibility out of hand. Lizzy had lost all her faith in their father. Jane, however, had not. Disappointed though she was in Papa’s refusal to keep Lydia at home, she could not but believe that, were he acquainted with all the details of Lydia’s misconduct, he would at last intervene.

She felt lighter when the letter was sanded and sealed, ready for the afternoon’s dispatch, and her spirits only improved when Charles sought her out soon thereafter.

“Are you well, my dear?” he inquired. “I had feared that last night’s scene might leave you somewhat dejected, but you seem to be in good cheer now.”

“I am distressed by Lydia’s actions, of course, but I do find myself content today. It is a relief to me to have a plan set out. Lizzy and Mr. Darcy will send out an advertisement today, and soon we shall have a governess to assist with Lydia, and we may turn our attention to pleasanter occupations.”

“Indeed.” She had anticipated a smile in response to her disclosures, but instead her words met with a frown.

“Charles? What troubles you? I had not thought to see you so downcast.”

“I am merely a little worried.”

“By what, may I ask?”

“We were very right to be stern with your sister last night, but I confess it troubles me to see her so distressed. Young ladies cannot be blamed for desiring the fun of a season, can they? And it will be hard upon her to be ruled by a governess after being considered out in Hertfordshire.”

“It will be hard, certainly, but necessary, I think. Lydia has never been encouraged to reflect upon her conduct, nor to tend to her mind or her soul. Perhaps a governess might offer her a new outlook upon life.”

Or perhaps Papa would arrive to take the matter out of their hands entirely. Jane did not wish to give Charles false hope on this matter.
